Welcome to TPLTC here on Thorn Road, in old Bearsden. The club has served our local community for over 90 years, and continues to be a friendly and welcoming place to enjoy your tennis.
This part of Bearsden is a quiet, leafy suburban area, which is a conservation area. We have six excellent all weather artificial grass courts and four of them are floodlit. We do not have a licence so we cannot offer alcoholic beverages but we have a very nice clubhouse and we can certainly stretch to a cup of coffee. We have recently refurbished the changing rooms and the kitchen in our clubhouse, and we have a table tennis table which is popular with some of our members. The club is situated down a private lane, at 31a Thorn Road. As motor vehicles are not allowed in the lane, it provides a safe access for kids to walk down from the main road, and back again after their tennis.
Thorn Park offers a range of services associated with tennis in Bearsden and beyond. We have four gents teams and four ladies teams playing at all levels of competitive tennis in the West of Scotland, and in fact our first team has been league champions and Scottish Cup winners. So if competitive tennis is your ambition then there are plenty of opportunities. Please just make yourself known to the coaches who will put you in touch with our captains for the season. Read more
There are lots of kids teams also, playing at every level in West of Scotland leagues from red ball through to under 15. It is a great opportunity for kids to be introduced to a slightly more competitive scenario. Some children love it, and thrive on the excitement of competition. Others prefer just to play for fun. Either way is fine for us, and there is no pressure on the kids to compete. At a young age we want tennis above all to be fun and sociable. Just follow the team tennis tab for more information.
However, above all we are a local, friendly club where people come to enjoy a sociable game of tennis with friends. There is very little pressure on our courts, and it is rare to find no court available. We do our best to schedule coaching and matches in such a way as to always ensure that social play can take place. For this reason we have no booking system for the courts. If you are a member you can just turn up and play at any time up until 10pm. We do have organised social tennis on a Monday morning and a Thursday evening. Take a look at the Social Tennis tab for more details.
Local children are the lifeblood of the club. We have up to 100 children of all ages and abilities who participate in our coaching programme and we also run Easter and summer camps which are very popular. Our coaching team is run by Jordan Gray a British International player who is one of Scotland’s top professionals, and we also have a full time assistant coach, James Thow, an enthusiastic and capable coach who is very popular with the local children and who also liaises with local schools to help them with getting kids interested and involved in tennis. Please take a look at the coaching tab for more information. There is also a programme of performance coaching for those players who show more aptitude and a keen willingness to progress and to compete. This programme is by invitation only. If you think that your son or daughter could benefit from a more intensive style of coaching along with other more advanced children please make contact with the coaches.
Coaching is not limited to the younger members, of course. We have a full coaching programme for adults of all levels of skill and experience. Just take a look at the coaching tab for more information.
Obviously, our coaches are professional people who have built their careers at Thorn Park. The club itself however is managed entirely by volunteers, and we are always happy to hear from members who are able to help us with events or catering. Thorn Park is a private club, and so we focus our energies on ensuring that our members enjoy their tennis and get value from their membership. Members are able to introduce visitors occasionally, and we do open our coaching programme to non-members who may wish to try us out to see if we deliver what they want or need. However, the club cannot survive and prosper if we do not encourage people to join the club. We are always keen to introduce new adult members, and families in particular. We know that we exist in a highly competitive arena. There are so many opportunities which vie for our time and attention. However, if you do know someone who is keen to play tennis at any level, or who might want to tap in to a well-run coaching programme which delivers real value for money then please bring them along, and encourage them to join us.
All the details for membership are in the tabs.If you have any questions or problems please use our contact details to call or write to us. We love to hear suggestions for new ideas or improvements too.
Welcome to Thorn Park! We hope you make many friends here, and that you enjoy your tennis for many happy years.
